How to Apply as a Transfer Student
To apply for admission to WVU, you must:
- Review the admissions requirements.
- Fill out the WVU Application and include the nonrefundable application fee to apply for an on-campus program. The cost is $50 for domestic applicants and $65 for those from outside the country. - Request official transcripts from all institutions you have attended. You must also send your final high school transcript if you have fewer than 24 transferrable credits. How to Send Transcripts .
If a student chooses to enroll in college somewhere else after being rejected as a freshman at WVU, they may be considered for admission as a transfer student once they have earned at least 24 transferable credits from another accredited institution. In addition, students must have at least a 2. 0 grade point average in all college work attempted.
Admission Requirements for Transfer Students
If you have finished any post-secondary (after high school) coursework at a college or institution with regional accreditation, you are regarded as a transfer student. Students must have at least a 2 in order to enroll at WVU as a transfer student. 0 grade point average in all college work attempted. Additionally, transfer students with fewer than 24 transferable credits must also meet the requirements for freshman admission in order to apply as test-optional candidates.
Please review the various program transfer requirements as some programs and majors have different course requirements and higher grade point requirements.
Students with coursework from institutions that lack regional accreditation must request approval to have such coursework articulated as Prior Learning Credit.
All application materials and supporting documents must be received by these dates in order for you to be eligible for transfer admission:
- by August 1 for fall semester admission
- by December 1 for spring semester admission

Transferring Course Credit to WVU
Once the Office of Admissions at WVU has received your completed application and transcript(s) and determined whether you are eligible for admission, they will assess your transfer credits. Academically and in all other respects, applicants for transfer admission to the university must be qualified to transfer back to that institution. Although not all courses will be directly comparable to courses at WVU, credits and grades for college-level courses taken at any regionally accredited institution in the United States are transferable. Using our Transfer Equivalency Self Service (TESS) system, you can find out more information about how your current course credits will transfer to WVU.
Once you are admitted, the Office of Admissions will translate your previous credit into WVU courses based on the information in our transfer database. Any courses that have not been evaluated and entered into our transfer database will appear on your transcript and DegreeWorks audit as NOEQ 100. You can then use the WVU Transfer Equivalency Review Request (TERR) system to request the evaluation of your NOEQ course(s).
The subject code for a course may differ based on how it has been evaluated. g. , BIOL for Biology) could be altered to more closely match WVU’s course offerings. For instance, a course on plant anatomy and structures that was categorized as a biology course at your previous school might be converted to PLSC (Plant Science) on your WVU transcript.
The corresponding WVU course number will be assigned to courses that are directly comparable to a WVU course offering. A course will be labeled as an accepted transfer course if there is no direct equivalent but it is still accepted by West Virginia University. A 100-level history course on Russian politics, for instance, might be translated to HIST 1TC, where the “1” denotes the level at which it was taught and the “TC” denotes “Transfer Credit,” if there is no equivalent course at WVU. If these courses can be applied directly to your degree requirements, your adviser and academic college or school will then decide. Transfer courses sometimes only count toward general WVU credit rather than specific degree requirements.
