NEW BUSINESS ANALYTICS MAJOR
Whitman joined an expanding list of universities offering the major when it introduced a new Business Analytics major last fall. Students have the chance to learn about all aspects and business applications of data and analytics through the Business Analytics major. Students can also focus on financial analytics and marketing analytics, as well as learn how to interpret data to increase operational effectiveness.
Accounting, Business Analytics, General Accounting, Entrepreneurship, Finance, Marketing, Management Studies, Retail Management, Supply Chain Management, and Real Estate are among the ten majors available to Whitman undergraduate business students.
Whitman students who are enrolled in the direct admission business school program start taking a number of business courses in their first semester and finish at least 12 business courses by the end of their second year.
IMPRESS PROGRAM
The Goodman IMPRESS Program, which emphasizes soft-skill development for all Whitman students through extracurricular activities, is one of the distinguishing features of the Whitman education.
Adams, Harrison, Marshall, and Waverly are the four virtual “houses” assigned to each new Whitman student. Each of these houses has its own emblem, and a faculty house mentor oversees it. The mentor helps students through their introductory business courses.
Numerous extracurricular activities are undertaken by student houses, for which they will receive points. Five main learning objectives are the focus of the activities, including Personal
Every point a student earns counts toward both their individual point total and the overall point of the house they are a part of. In other words, each student is engaged in a personal challenge as well as a house challenge. Employers will be able to see two scores on a student’s resume when he or she is looking for internships and job opportunities: a GPA and an IMPRESS Score.
Whitman’s IMPRESS program, which is like a business school’s take on Harry Potter’s Hogwarts Houses, offers students a unique, enjoyable, and quantifiable way to develop and present their soft-skill competency. The Whitman School offers a comprehensive program that not only helps students develop their soft skills but also measures their level of proficiency in it, in contrast to many B-schools that are starting to offer new opportunities for soft-skill development.
“SHARK TANK” STYLE CAPSTONE EXPERIENCE
Some 85% of 2019 alumni that we surveyed reported engaging in at least one %E2%80%9Csignature experience%E2%80%9D that was a key part of their business learning at Whitman
The senior capstone project was that experience for the vast majority of Whitman alumni. Teams of senior students compete in a business pitch competition where they are required to develop an original product or service and a comprehensive business plan in order to successfully launch it. Students from all business majors, including finance, marketing, and supply chain management, collaborate in cross-functional teams. Similar to the television program “Shark Tank,” the teams present their plans to a panel of local business owners and professionals and receive feedback at the end. “Winning teams are given grants that they can use to launch their business ideas.
One 2018 graduate told us, “You learn the ins and outs of being an entrepreneur, receive practical experience in presenting to executives, communication and team-building skills, and the list goes on.” From talking to friends who attended other universities, I can say that this is a unique experience that not every college student participates in or has the chance to have. ”.
The capstone project at Whitman is distinctive in a few ways. One factor adding to the project’s real-world experience is the fact that local business leaders and professionals are on the judging panel. Second, the grant gives students the chance to take their concept and make it a reality. Whitman students are ensured by the year-long experience that they are not only adept in their own role but also have the ability to function with ease in a team setting.
Another 2018 alumnus said, “After having taken many of those classes before, it was a great chance to push ourselves to put all of the business, finance, accounting, supply chain, and marketing knowledge to the test.”
In general, the Whitman program is excellent for a business student who desires to enhance their technical and soft business skills through healthy competition. It helps to enjoy Shark Tank and Harry Potter.
Alumni say:
Whitman students are required to take part in a capstone project that emphasizes bringing all majors together, inventing a unique good or service, and moving through ideation, to raising money, marketing, production, distribution, and liquidation. All of this culminates in a series of final pitches to a panel of judges (conjure up “Shark Tank”) I actually designed a global distribution strategy for our product as a supply chain major. There were numerous late-night sessions spent reviewing our cost sheet’s specifics and sourcing information. While we could have followed in their footsteps and launched our products as entrepreneurs after graduation, I was so relieved to have come away from the experience knowing that building something from the ground up WAS possible. It was an incredible responsibility and a lesson in ownership. “The senior capstone project enabled me to delve deeper into my field of study and apply what I had learned in the classroom to real-world business situations. Along with expanding my knowledge of other business topics outside of my major, I was able to do so in a way that helped me stand out in the workplace. “I participated in the Panaschi competition, which gave me the idea to launch an entrepreneurial endeavor after college. With the information I learned, I later founded a media company that now reaches more than 100,000 people each month. “I participated in a business-focused study abroad program in Hong Kong, where I also completed an internship. This was significant to me because it provided me with understanding of the differences between Western and Asian business practices. ”.
