West Chester University has a distinguished past. It was founded in 1812 as a private, state-funded institution. The school was renamed West Chester Normal School in 1869 as Pennsylvania started to have a bigger presence in public education. In 1913, Wester Chester became one of a select few normal schools that made the transition from private ownership to direct ownership by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
