A Lutheran university called Valparaiso University, or simply Valpo, is located in northwest Indiana, just one hour east of Chicago. Graduate students can earn degrees in about 40 different fields, including business and law, and undergraduate students can select from 70 programs within five colleges. As a religious institution, Valpo provides students with a number of ministries, such as Campus Crusade and the St. Teresa of Avila Student Center. On-campus smoking and drinking are forbidden, and community service is encouraged. Around 15 fraternities and sororities, the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC), and even a ballroom dancing club are just a few of the organizations that Valpo University students can participate in. Nearly 20 varsity sports teams from the Valpo Crusaders compete in the NCAA Division I, in addition to a number of intramural activities. The community’s Popcorn Festival, held in memory of late Valparaiso resident Orville Redenbacher, is another entertaining destination.
