High school students: Direct to CollegeStudents applying to enter the UW as freshmen
You will be automatically considered for Direct to College (DTC) admission if you were admitted to the University of Washington as a freshman and declared engineering-undeclared or an engineering major (other than computer engineering) as your top choice on your application.
If accepted DTC, you will enroll at the University of Washington as an Engineering Undeclared (ENGRUD) student and have the chance to learn about a variety of engineering specialties before applying to be placed in an engineering major after your first year. Admission to DTC is only available in autumn quarter.
For more information on the application process and deadlines, visit the College of Engineering’s Freshman admission website.
Students admitted through Direct to CollegeEngineering Undeclared (ENGRUD) students
As a new Engineering Undeclared student at the University of Washington, your first year will consist of UW general education courses as well as engineering foundational coursework in math and science. You will request to be placed in an engineering major at the conclusion of your freshman year. The requirements to request placement are as follows:
- Maintain a minimum 2.50 ENGRUD GPA.
- Complete placement requirements with grades of 2. 0 or above in each course.
You will be placed into one of the engineering majors if you meet the placement requirements and include six majors in your placement request. However, you might or might not be assigned to your top major choice. There may be more placement requests for some majors than there is room for. Learn more about the placement process.
UW interest-changers: capacity-constrained admission pathwayCurrent UW students in majors other than Engineering Undeclared
For current University of Washington students admitted to a major but not through the Direct to College pathway, this is the only point of entry to ME. The applicants are on track to start the department curriculum in the autumn quarter of their junior year and have completed at least four quarters of coursework at the equivalent of the college level. Applications will be accepted beginning in mid-March, with a deadline of 5:00 p.m. on April 5th.
Ensure you are on track to apply
Find out the enrollment requirements for the engineering programs you are thinking about, as well as the prerequisites for applications and additional lower-division coursework. Although the application requirements should be your top priority, it’s crucial to have a strategy for finishing the enrollment requirements before beginning the major.
Comparison of the application and enrollment requirements for the various engineering majors » Required courses by department when comparing majors
- Cumulative UW GPA of 2.5 or higher
- Grade of 2.0 or higher in each required course
- Course prerequisites: Need to be finished by the department application deadline
- Cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher
- Grade of 2. 0 or higher in each application and enrollment requirement.
- Complete the coursework for the following courses before enrolling in classes in the fall.
Any admissions offer is subject to meeting enrollment requirements with a grade of 2. 0 or higher and upholding a cumulative GPA of 2 or higher 5.
1 Students are strongly encouraged to complete the 3-quarter calculus based physics sequence before enrolling in a Mechanical Engineering program.
2 Although the courses are not required for admission, math beyond calculus is required for junior level ME coursework. Students are highly encouraged to complete differential equations and matrix algebra before entering into junior year.
Transfer students and Postbac studentsFor students at a college or university other than UW
If you want to transfer to UW engineering after beginning your engineering studies at another college or university, you must meet all enrollment requirements by the start of the fall quarter and the application requirements by April 5.
- Cumulative UW GPA of 2.5 or higher
- Grade of 2.0 or higher in each required course
- Course prerequisites: Need to be finished by the department application deadline
To ensure that you can graduate on time, the following courses must be finished by the start of your autumn quarter enrollment. Even though they are not necessary, we strongly advise you to finish these courses before beginning the major.
To apply as a transfer student, you will need to apply to the UW by the application deadline listed for your intended start quarter. If you miss the UW application deadline, you will not be able to apply to an engineering major.
You will then apply to the majors of your choice using the Engineering Application.
Students can apply to the department as post-baccalaureate applicants if they have a bachelor’s degree. The application procedure will resemble that of a transfer student the most, but you must first apply to the University of Washington as a postbacc student before submitting a major application by April 5th. Normally, it takes two years at a community college to fulfill the admissions and enrollment requirements before becoming eligible to transfer to UW Seattle. For a list of course requirements, consult the table above.
Attend a Transfer Thursday session hosted by the UW to get an overview of the process.
