Freshman applicants who meet UW admissions criteria and who list an engineering department (or Engineering-undecided) as their first choice major on their UW application are automatically considered for Direct to College admission. UW Engineering Undeclared StudentsFor UW students admitted to UW as Engineering Undeclared (ENGRUD)

We employ a comprehensive review process that takes grades and personal statements into account to determine placement if more students apply for the major than we can accommodate.

UW Students outside the College of Engineering – Major AdmissionFor UW students in majors other than Engineering Undeclared
This is the only admission point to the B.S. ChemE program for UW students admitted to a major other than Engineering Undeclared (ENGRUD). Applicants have completed at least four quarters of equivalent college-level coursework and are on track to begin the department curriculum in the spring quarter of their sophomore year. The application deadline is January 15.
The major application opens two weeks before the application deadline. Even when the application is not open, you can read the list of requirements and see the personal statement prompts by visiting the online application website in order to prepare.
Grades, particularly in prerequisite courses, the personal statement, and factors like the difficulty of completed courses, the frequency of incomplete or withdrawal grades, the number of repeated courses, relevant work experience, maturity of attitude, record of honors, a demonstrated ability to take at least 12 credits per quarter, and special circumstances as disclosed by the applicant are all taken into account when making an admissions decision.
At the time of application, students must have earned at least 55 academic credits, including these required courses or their equivalents. In order to discuss their goals, students are also encouraged to meet with a departmental adviser.

A candidate may be enrolled in up to two required courses at the time of application (e g. , MATH 207 and PHYS 122). Students must have completed all admissions requirements as well as the courses listed in our Continuation Policy in order to be on track to graduate with their degree in a timely manner.

Transfer AdmissionFor students at a college or university other than the UW
Successful transfer involves two separate admissions processes. To be taken into consideration, students must complete both by the deadlines specified. Transfer students must be prepared to take CHEM E 310 in spring quarter as they are only admitted for the spring quarter.
- Apply to UW by December 15.
- Apply for Chemical Engineering Upper Division admission by January 15.

Autumn Quarter Enrollment Requirements:
Students must have completed all admissions requirements as well as the courses listed in our Continuation Policy in order to be on track to graduate with their degree in a timely manner. Transfer students are accepted for the spring quarter and must complete all of the following additional courses by the start of the autumn quarter in order to enroll in CHEM E 310 and other courses that spring.

We advise students to apply for financial aid using the FAFSA or WAFSA by January 15 in order to receive priority consideration. The ChemE Department also participates in the NSF S-STEM Scholarship Program for Transfer Students and offers departmental scholarships with a May 1 application deadline each year.
Appeals of admissions decisions
Students may write a letter to the department chair to contest the committee’s decision on their admission. The letter should detail any mitigating circumstances and may contain any additional information the student thinks is necessary to support the appeal.
