The school reinstated the admission option in 2019 after discontinuing its binding Early Decision option in 2006. Students may now submit applications as Regular Decision, Early Decision, or Early Action candidates.
The Early Decision option was initially discontinued by UVA due to concerns that it might be biased against low-income students (who could not make a binding decision without knowing their chances of receiving financial aid).
The Early Decision option should be reinstated because the Early Action option, which debuted in 2011, gives students more time to compare their financial aid packages.
For students who are certain that UVA is their top college choice, Early Decision is a binding admissions plan. Early Decision applicants are required to withdraw any pending college applications after acceptance and enroll in UVA.
Students applying early should have strong applications and academic records that give the admissions committee no reason to doubt that they will maintain their exceptional performance throughout their senior year of high school.
For students whose applications and academic records stand on their own, Early Action is also a fantastic choice; the only difference is that it is not binding.
Students who are certain of the institution they want to attend and who can be relied upon to continue performing academically well in their senior year of high school should apply early.

Despite the fact that the early decision pool typically includes a more limited selection of applicants, the Office of Admissions worked to maintain diversity at the University. First-generation college students made up 132 of the accepted students, matching the number of first-gen students accepted during the early decision cycle of the previous year.
Compared to the 74 Black students who were accepted through early decision last year, 59 accepted students identify as Black. In addition, 61 students identify as Hispanic and two as American Indian, down from 96 and 8 respectively from the previous year.
61 admitted students hail from foreign countries. Similar to the early decision cycle from last year, 56 percent identify as female.
This year, applicants were not required to submit test scores. This rule was initially put in place for the 2020 admissions cycle, and an increase in applications has accompanied it. It is unknown whether the university will maintain the test-optional policy after this admissions cycle since it originally intended to do so until 2023.
Roberts said that while not every applicant could be accepted, he sends his best wishes to those who were turned away or deferred.
