Can you provide an informal or unofficial evaluation of my credentials to let me know my chances of being admitted?
No. After the application deadline, we only assess fully completed and submitted applications.
Is there a preference for students who have just finished their undergraduate degrees or those who have work experience?
There is no preference. Every year, we anticipate welcoming back students who have recently completed their degrees and recent working professionals.
Do you admit students who are currently enrolled in another graduate program?
Although applicants from other programs are welcome, we do not accept transfer credit. However, for students interested in our 11-month residential MSDS degree program, we do offer dual degrees with the University of Virginia School of Medicine, Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and Darden School of Business.
Is a three-year undergraduate degree acceptable?
No, a job interview is not a requirement for applying.
Are international students required to submit an English translation of their transcripts?
Yes, a NACES-accredited transcript verification service must provide an English translation for any transcripts that have not been translated into English. A customized application has been made by SpanTran, a NACES-member company, for the School of Data Science at a reduced cost. You can access their application by clicking here. Applications won’t be deemed complete if they don’t include the necessary English translation from a recognized transcript verification service.
I’m applying to the online M.S. in Data Science program as an international student. Am I eligible for a student visa to study in the U.S. if admitted to the program?
According to federal regulations, students enrolled in the online program are not eligible for the F-1 visa. International students who wish to study in the U. S. should apply to the residential full-time MSDS program.
Can I defer my offer of admission?
If admitted students have severe mitigating health or financial issues, they may postpone their offer of enrollment until the start date of the following cohort. Admitted students must accept their offer of admission, send the non-refundable $400 tuition deposit, which will be applied to their future tuition, and send the late start request form in order to request a deferral. Deferrals are not guaranteed and are only given at the School of Data Science’s discretion. Applicants may reapply to the program if they are not granted a deferral.
Must all prerequisites be completed prior to submission of the application?
No, you do not need to finish all requirements before submitting your application. However, you must be enrolled in any pending prerequisite courses at the time your application is submitted, and you must give complete information regarding any pending courses.
How do I know if I have satisfied the prerequisites?
To determine precisely what you must learn in each prerequisite course, consult the list of Prerequisite Key Topics. You will need these foundational skills when the program first begins.
Is the GRE, GMAT or other graduate school standardized test required?
We do not demand or accept standardized test results (i e. in the comprehensive review of applications for our programs
Do I have to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores?
Candidates who have or will have earned their undergraduate degree entirely from a institution (or institutions) where English is the primary language of instruction are exempt from taking the TOEFL or IELTS. The TOEFL or IELTS score must be self-reported on the application by all other international applicants. IELTS Academic as well as IELTS General Training are accepted.

- Without a department code, official TOEFL scores should be submitted via ETS using the institution code B875.
- The IELTS test center must electronically submit the official IELTS results; paper Test Report Forms will not be accepted, nor are institution codes or department codes required.
Are there minimum TOEFL and IELTS scores?
Applications with scores that fall short of the minimum standards won’t be taken into consideration by the admissions committee. To be valid, the TOEFL or IELTS must have been taken within the last two years.

Is financial support (need-based or merit fellowships) available?
The M. S. A professional degree in data science, comparable to a law degree or an MBA Federal loans are a common form of financial aid for students as a result.
Additionally, the School of Data Science also offers need-based fellowships to qualified students. To qualify, students must fill out their FAFSA forms and indicate theyd like to be considered on their application for a need-based fellowship. Is there an application fee?
Yes, a non-refundable application fee of $85 is required prior to submission of the application. Applicants who believe they may qualify for an application fee waiver should first review the Application Fee Waiver Information and then submit an Application Fee Waiver Request Form. You cannot be granted a fee waiver after payment of the application fee. An application will not be considered submitted until the fee is paid.
Is an admission tuition deposit required?
Yes, if an offer of admission is accepted, a $400 non-refundable admission tuition deposit will be needed. This deposit will be applied towards tuition.
