Freshmen Admission
Prospective UT-Austin freshmen students should visit the Office of Admissions for information on procedures and requirements. Select Nursing as your first choice major and submit responses to the following short answer prompts:
- Explain the influences on your decision to pursue a career in nursing; and
- How have your schoolwork and extracurricular pursuits equipped you to pursue a nursing degree?
Internal Transfer Admission
Students already enrolled at UT-Austin who want to switch to nursing should visit the Internal Transfer for details on admission requirements and the application process.
Internal transfer policies at the University of Texas at Austin are consistent with the internal transfer rules for the School of Nursing. Acceptance is competitive and, on a space, available basis.
External Transfer Admission
External transfer applicants are prospective students who have already started their studies at another college or university and desire to apply to UT-Austin. To apply, visit the Office of Admissions.
Choose Nursing as your first choice major, and submit the necessary essays and documents by the deadline of March 1 as instructed. No exams such as the HESI or TEAS are required.
There are three pre-requisite courses needed: Biology, Chemistry, and Statistics. These are introductory level courses, not requiring labs. It is advised to take as many courses from the freshman year and sophomore first semester of the BSN degree plan (PDF) as possible in addition to those three courses.
To confirm if your courses transfer from another Texas institution, please use the Automated Transfer Equivalency System.
Acceptance is competitive and, on a space, available basis. Only fall admission is available to external transfer applicants at the School of Nursing. There is no additional application required for direct entry into the BSN degree program before beginning upper division coursework.
Honors Program Admission
The goal of the undergraduate nursing honors program is to improve the educational opportunities for highly motivated nursing students who are enthusiastic about conducting undergraduate research and creating scholarly works. During the second semester of the first year of college, students are first admitted to the School of Nursing’s Honors Program. Freshmen students who have achieved a 3. BSN Objectives
The following goals are anticipated to be attained by the bachelor’s in nursing program graduate:
- Integrate knowledge from nursing, biological and behavioral sciences, and the humanities by using critical thinking when assessing, planning, delivering, and evaluating nursing care.
- Apply critical thinking and clinical judgment in a problem-solving process to safely meet the health care needs of people in a variety of settings, including individuals, families, groups, populations, and communities.
- Demonstrate personal accountability and responsibility for adhering to legal, ethical, and professional standards of practice in nursing (e g Texas Nurse Practice Act, Texas Occupation Code).
- Collaborate with other professionals to deliver healthcare through delegation, coordination, case management, and consultation.
- Participate in nursing and interprofessional initiatives to enhance the provision of high-quality, safe, and culturally-sensitive healthcare to a variety of people in a variety of groups in a variety of populations and communities.
- To support ongoing personal and professional development, exhibit your core professional values.
- Analyze research findings critically and use them to illustrate evidence-based nursing practice.
- Examine how different individuals, families, groups, populations, communities, and health agencies are affected by health policy.
- Improve nursing practice, administration, education, and research by integrating information and health care technology
- Make use of your leadership abilities to advance the nursing profession and encourage ongoing development of the health care delivery system.
