- René Descartes was a French philosopher, mathematician, scientist, and lay Catholic who created analytic geometry, which connected the previously disparate fields of geometry and algebra. René Descartes was born in France and lived from the years 1596 to 1650 (when he was 54). His occupations included correspondent, astronomer, mathematician, military personnel, and mechanical automaton engineer. He initially worked for the Dutch States Army of Prince of Orange and Stadtholder of the United Provinces Maurice of Nassau, where he spent the majority of his working life. Descartes is regarded as one of the founding fathers of modern philosophy and algebraic geometry, as well as one of the most significant intellectual figures of the Dutch Golden Age.
- Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen was a German mechanical engineer and physicist who, on November 8, 1895, produced and detected electromagnetic radiation in the wavelength range known as X-rays or Röntgen rays. For this achievement, he was awarded the first Nobel Prize in Physics in 1901. Wilhelm Röntgen was born in Germany and lived from 1845 to 1923 (aged 78). The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) named the radioactive element 111, roentgenium, after Röntgen in 2004 as a tribute to his achievements. The unit of measurement roentgen was also named after him.
- Political career politician William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham, PC, FRS was a British statesman of the Whig group who served as Prime Minister of Great Britain in the middle of the 18th century. He was born in the United Kingdom and lived from 1708 to 1778 (aged 70). To distinguish him from his son, William Pitt the Younger, who served as prime minister, historians refer to him as Chatham or William Pitt the Elder. Due to his persistent refusal to accept a title until 1766, Pitt was also known as the Great Commoner.
- Willem Einthoven was a Dutch physician and physiologist who was born in Indonesia in the years 1860–1927 (at the age of 67). His occupations included university teacher and physiologist. In 1895, he created the first electrocardiograph (ECG or EKG) that was actually useful, and in 1924, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (“for the discovery of the mechanism of the electrocardiogram”) for his work.
