- Nicolaus Copernicus was a Renaissance polymath who was active as a mathematician, astronomer, and Catholic canon. He created a model of the universe that put the Sun, not the Earth, at its center. - Giacomo Girolamo Casanova was an Italian explorer and author from the Republic of Venice who was born in Italy and lived from 1725 to 1798 (at the age of 73). In 1742, he enrolled at the University of Padua and graduated with a doctorate in both laws. One of the most reliable sources for the traditions and norms of 18th-century European social life is his autobiography, Histoire de ma vie (Story of My Life).
- Andreas Vesalius was a 16th-century physician, anatomist, and author of one of the most important books on human anatomy, De Humani Corporis Fabrica Libri Septem (On the fabric of the human body in seven books). He was born in Belgium and lived from the years 1514 to 1564 (when he was 50 years old). Vesalius is frequently credited with founding modern human anatomy. Brussels, which at the time was a part of the Habsburg Netherlands, is where he was born. He taught at the University of Padua from 1537 to 1542 before rising to the position of Imperial Physician at the court of Emperor Charles V.
- William Harvey was an English physician who made significant contributions to anatomy and physiology. He was born in the United Kingdom and lived from 1578 to 1657 (at the age of 79). William Harvey attended the University of Padua from 1599 to 1602, graduating with a doctor of medicine. Although earlier writers such as Realdo Colombo, Michael Servetus, and Jacques Dubois had provided precursors of the theory, he was the first known physician to describe in full and detail the systemic circulation and properties of blood being pumped to the brain and the rest of the body by the heart.
