  • António de Oliveira Salazar was a Portuguese dictator who presided over the Council of Ministers from 1932 to 1968. He was born in Portugal and lived to be 81 years old. His occupations included university teacher, pedagogue, economist, and politician. He renamed the corporatist dictatorship that ruled Portugal from 1933 to 1974 as the Estado Novo (“New State”) after seizing power under the Ditadura Nacional (“National Dictatorship”). Salazar was a political economy professor at Coimbra University.
  • Military personnel, poet, playwright, and writer were among Lus de Cames’ occupations when he was born in Portugal in the years 1525 to 1580 at the age of 55. His verse mastery has been compared to that of Dante, Homer, Virgil, Shakespeare, Milton, Vondel, and Vondel. Though he produced a sizable body of lyrical poetry and drama, Os Lusadas (The Lusiads) remains his most famous work. The Parnasum of Lus de Cames, his collection of poetry, was misplaced during his lifetime. The Portuguese language is sometimes referred to as the “language of Cames” due to the immense influence of his masterpiece, Os Lusadas.
  • Agostinho Neto was an Angolan politician and poet who was born in 1922 and died in 1979 at the age of 57. His occupations included being a poet and a physician. After leading the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) during the country’s independence war (1961–1974), he served as Angola’s first president from 1975 to 1979. He served as the MPLA’s leader from 1975 to his death in the civil war. In addition to his literary endeavors, he is regarded as Angola’s greatest poet. His birthday is commemorated in Angola as National Heroes Day, a holiday.
  • Sebastio José de Carvalho e Melo, 1st Marquis of Pombal, also known as the Marquis of Pombal (Portuguese pronunciation: [mke d pba]), was a Portuguese statesman and diplomat who effectively ruled the Portuguese Empire from 1750 to 1777 as king. Born in Portugal Years 1699-1782 (aged 83), he was also a politician, diplomat, seismologist, and urban planner. Pombal, a liberal reformer who was influenced by the Age of Enlightenment, oversaw Portugal’s recovery from the Lisbon earthquake in 1755 and modernized the country’s governmental, business, and religious institutions. Pombal accumulated and used autocratic power during his protracted ministerial career.
