What Decisions Mean
Congratulations! You have until January 16, 2021 to confirm your enrollment if you were admitted through the Early Decision I round. Responses to the University of Chicago must be received by May 3, 2021 if you were admitted through the Early Action round.
Defer: At this time, we are unable to offer you a spot in the Class of 2025, but we will review your application and make a final determination in the Early Decision II or Regular Decision round. By January 25, 2021, kindly complete the defer response form that is accessible through your UChicago Account.

The following advice will help you move forward if UChicago is still your top choice despite being deferred:
Do:
- By January 25, 2021, complete the defer response form on your UChicago Account.
- Have your school send us a midyear transcript. When we review your application, it’s helpful for us to be able to see your senior year grades; your midyear transcript will be the best way for us to do this.
- Send an email to your regional admissions counselor. We don’t need a novel, but a thoughtful email note of one to two paragraphs can help us understand and take into consideration your continued interest if UChicago is still your top choice.
- Continue your college search. There are a ton of fantastic options for higher education, with UChicago being just one. We know you carefully considered UChicago, and we hope you will give your ongoing college search the same amount of thought. You’ll have a wonderful home at the conclusion of this process. We advise you to continue your college search and consult with your counselor to find other institutions you’d be happy to attend if UChicago were to become unavailable.
- a a a to the a the the to the a a a to the a a a a a Although it is not required, if you have any additional materials to share, feel free to upload them.
- Test-optional admissions policy: Deferred students who did not previously share testing may do so as part of their updates to our office. Although this is certainly neither required nor specifically encouraged, we understand that some students may have updated SAT/ACT, subject, or other supplemental tests you may wish to share, and we would be happy to consider them Students who previously applied to share SAT or ACT testing, however, are not permitted to choose a test-optional method of ongoing review.
- Deferred applicants may also choose to move into our legally binding Early Decision II application pool by contacting your regional admissions counselor and completing the Early Decision II Agreement form by January 25, 2021, after consulting with your family and school counselor to determine if this is a good fit for you. We are aware that not every applicant is a good fit for the Early Decision II commitment, so we will continue to give deferred students who are still in our Regular Decision applicant pool full consideration.
Don’t:
- Worry about meeting us. We don’t base our decisions on whether a student has visited (in fact, visitors aren’t allowed in our office right now) or participated in our online programming. If you still have questions, we certainly encourage you to attend a virtual info session or other online event to learn more about us, but you are under no obligation to do so. All that is required to express your continued interest is to take the actions outlined above.
- Start writing all-new essays. The application you initially submitted to us is a strong one, according to our assessment; we just require a little more time and information to make a final judgment. After a deferral, we review applicants’ initial application materials while taking into account the minor changes we suggested above. We do not mandate or advise students to spend time revising essays.
- Panic. The decision to admit you is not a judgment of who you are as a person. Decisions are made over a long period of time by a number of people and take into account the entire applicant pool Please keep in mind that we cannot give reasons for decisions over the phone or via email, as it really is impossible to condense the conversations behind our decisions in a way that would be adequate or helpful to the applicant
Deny: Despite our best efforts, we are unable to accept you into the Class of 2025. There is no process for appealing admissions decisions. We wish you the best as you pursue your educational goals
