UCLA is already a competitive university, with a first-year acceptance rate of 14% in 2018 %E2%80%93 the same as Cornell%E2%80%99s that year
However, the standard may be even higher for students applying to programs outside of the College of Letters and Science. The School of Nursing, Samueli School of Engineering, and School of Theater, Film, and Television are three of UCLA’s most selective institutions.
Nursing
The nursing program has an acceptance rate of 2% for incoming freshmen Only 51 freshmen and 11 transfers were admitted this year despite the university receiving close to 3,000 applications.
According to Valerie Espinosa, a third-year nursing student and president of the UCLA Nursing Students Association, nursing is probably more demanding because upon completion of the program, nursing students will take the National Council Licensure Examination and become registered to work as nurses immediately.
Because you’re entering a field where you’ll be caring for people, they obviously want to take the time to ensure that you learn everything, according to Espinosa. “Therefore, you want to ensure that you won’t accidentally kill anyone.” ”.
In 2017-2018, 95% of UCLA nursing students passed the NCLEX.
Nursing programs tend to be competitive. According to Espinosa, the majority of nursing programs nationwide have small cohorts, typically between 22 and 60 students per program, and low acceptance rates.
At the beginning of the 2019–2020 academic year, there were 604 total students enrolled in UCLA’s nursing program. Students pursuing a bachelor’s degree, two different master’s degrees, and two different doctorates are included in this. Eighty-four percent of the students in the program are women.
Getting into the program can be difficult. The majority of accepted students have shown in their applications that they have experience working in hospitals, though some don’t, according to Espinosa.
Since maybe middle school, I’ve known that I wanted to work in the medical field, whether as a nurse, pediatrician, or doctor, in some capacity, said Espinosa
Potential nursing students are required to submit a separate, supplementary application after applying to UCLA, as Espinosa learned after clicking “submit” on the general application.
Espinosa stated that application takes an additional week and includes inquiries specific to the nursing program.
But Espinosa said she thinks the program is worth it.
Even nursing professors with thirty years of experience will admit to her that they’re still discovering new things about the field, she said.
In all honesty, she said, “I think that’s one of the biggest things for me, like always being able to learn, but also being able to help people and just being there for them when they’re in a very vulnerable time.”
Engineering
The Samueli School of Engineering is notoriously difficult to get into, with acceptance rates for some majors in the school dipping below 10% Sydney Chang, a second-year student studying materials science, claimed that she wasn’t overly stressed when she applied.
She promised to attend a community college first if she didn’t get accepted.
“Community college isn’t a bad place to go,” she said. “(But the process) I think it was relatively easy. Just complete the application, send it, and cross your fingers. ”.
The most difficult engineering program to get into in 2018 was computer engineering, with an acceptance rate of 6%
Aerospace engineering was the next lowest, at 7. 6%. Computer science had an 8. 2% acceptance rate, and students applying to the engineering school undeclared were accepted at a rate of 9 5%.
The programs are extremely selective, so the fortunate few who are accepted almost always have high test scores, high GPAs, and engage in lots of extracurricular activities, according to Chang. Some have already pursued internships and even research, she added.
Despite the fact that most majors are challenging to enter, some are simpler, such as materials engineering, which saw 33 1% of its 357 total applicants accepted in 2018.
In 2018, 1,052 of the nearly 4,000 students who eventually enrolled in UCLA’s engineering program were female, and 404 were underrepresented minorities.
The largest disproportion came in electrical engineering, whose 2018 incoming class was only 15% female Bioengineering had the most even distribution, with an incoming class that was 48% women
Although the college is typically less selective, the application process is the same as it is for the College of Letters and Science.
Theater, Film and Television
The Theater, Film and Television School at UCLA is ranked among the top five U.S. film schools by The Hollywood Reporter. S. That might be why it has an acceptance rate of 4%
Caroline Chou, a second-year film student, said, “I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, I’m not going to get in,’ for a long time. “But, here I am!”.
The amount of writing required for the application, according to Chou, was the hardest part of the procedure.
Three additional essays are submitted by applicants to the film program: one on a “life challenge,” one on why they want to study film at UCLA, and a final piece of creative writing or film analysis, according to Chou.
“I’m kind of a procrastinator,” she said. “And, it was a lot of writing. I struggled with some writer’s block. ”.
Chou, however, found that the TFT application was more comfortable for her, making the general admissions application more challenging.
I knew you could be as creative as you wanted to be with the TFT (application),” Chou said. “And I’m more of a creative person. ”.
In addition to the standard application, the theater program’s website states that some applicants may also be required to participate in an audition or interview in order to be considered for admission.
Chou stated, “UCLA has kind of always been a dream school for me.” Then, I didn’t really decide to pursue film until a fairly late time. Therefore, I was just thinking, “Shoot your shot,” since you never know what might happen. ”.
The most successful UCLA applicants can demonstrate originality in their work, according to Chou.
The majority of the time, I still believe it to be a fever dream, said Chou. “And I just struck gold. They might have liked my creative writing ideas because they were original. But I don’t know. Maybe it’s just a writer thing. But every time I return, I wonder, “How was I accepted?”
Chou said that after the TFT program chooses which applicants it wants, it sends that list to UCLA’s main admissions office. UCLA Admissions then makes the final decisions.
