Application Procedures and Criteria

COVID-19 Application Requirement Adjustments. More Information.

Candidates should submit their applications to the American Association of Dental Schools Application Service (AADSAS) between May 10, 2022 and February 1st, 2023 for the program beginning in July 2022. Interviews will take place from October 2022 to February 2023. Starting in late September 2020, candidates who have been chosen for an interview will receive written notification. Please submit the following information to AADSAS:.

  • a full AADSAS application, including a personal statement outlining your reasons for wanting to work in dentistry. Please visit www. adea. org for application information;.
  • submit updated transcripts to AADSAS at the end of the fall 2022 term; official transcripts from every university attended (including study abroad programs and any universities attended other than the one awarding the diploma);
  • two letters of recommendation from professors and a third letter of recommendation, which could be from a pre-professional composite committee, community service, or research;
  • Candidates must be either US citizens or permanent residents, or international students who have completed or will complete a bachelor’s degree at an American four-year institution of higher learning that is accredited.
  • Tufts is open to receiving any additional letters of recommendation from instructors or employers, but they must be submitted through AADSAS. Please be aware that AADSAS only accepts a maximum of four letters of recommendation.

Dental Admissions Test (DAT) scores will be downloaded from the ADA directly to the AADSAS application. Please note, DAT scores obtained before June 1, 2020 are no longer valid. If you completed the DAT prior to June 1, 2020, you must retake the examination and submit updated scores. Please visit www.ada.org for information on the DAT.

Also applicants may submit unofficial DAT scores directly to denadmissions@tufts. edu up until the AADSAS application makes the official results accessible For those who will take the DAT this cycle, this will allow for an earlier review of their applications.

Once the Admissions Office receives an applicant’s AADSAS application, they will notify them of any additional requirements, along with a $90 fee.

The admissions office should NOT receive any additional materials or updates.

All necessary information should be included in the AADSAS application. Since AADSAS applications are paperless, we are unable to attach additional materials to them for review. Sending more paperwork will cause your application to be processed and reviewed later. You will be notified should we require additional information. To fully evaluate a candidate’s skills and capabilities, the Office of Admissions at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine reserves the right to at any time request more information.

  • 2 semesters (8 credits or 3 quarters) Biology
  • 1 semester ( 3 credits or 1 quarter) Upper-level Biology
  • 2 semesters (8 credits or 3 quarters) Inorganic Chemistry
  • 2 semesters (8 credits or 3 quarters) Physics
  • 1 semester (4 credits or 2 quarters) Organic Chemistry
  • 1 semester (3 credits or 1 quarter) Biochemistry
  • One semester of a humanities or social science subject that requires a lot of writing (possibly including history, english, comparative literature, philosophy, government, or women’s studies)

Please be aware that labs are necessary for all science courses, with the exception of Biochemistry and upper-level Biology (labs are only necessary for Biochemistry and upper-level Biology if they are an essential component of the course at the university where it is completed). All prerequisite coursework must be finished at a four-year institution that offers the prerequisite subject area’s bachelor’s degree and is accredited. A degree from a four-year college is required for matriculation. Community college coursework is not accepted for the prerequisite coursework.

All pre-requisites must be taken for a letter grade. No Pass/Fail credits will be accepted unless the college/university only offers such evaluations as a matter of policy. Candidates may be requested to provide documentation of this policy from the relevant office at their home institution in these situations. To be most competitive, applicants are advised to receive grades of “B” or higher in all prerequisite courses.

*COVID-19 Adjustment: If it was school policy for that time period, coursework taken in the spring and summer of 2020 is acceptable as Pass/Fail (including prerequisite courses).

The Admissions Committee will also disregard prerequisites that have been satisfied by receiving Advanced Placement credits. Because of their AP credits, applicants who were given college credit or who were deemed to have passed prerequisite courses must either retake them at a four-year institution or take an equivalent number of credits in upper-level coursework in the same discipline there.

We need 75 hours of exposure to the dental industry through internships. A general dentist must be shadowed for at least 40 hours.

Candidates are urged to participate as much as they can in the dental community. Candidates can take part in dental research or community service in addition to shadowing.

There will be a section on the AADSAS application where applicants can share challenges they have encountered because of the coronavirus. *COVID-19 Information It would be a good idea to let the admissions committee know if your dental shadowing was impacted in this way.

DAT Requirement:

Although DAT completion before September 1 of the cycle in which you submit your application is strongly encouraged, DAT scores for the 2022–2023 cycle are only valid if completed after June 1, 2020.

Competitive Scores:

  • 20 Academic Average
  • 21 Reading Comprehension
  • 19-20 Total Science

The Canadian DAT is also accepted. The four crucial score sections will typically yield scores of 19 or 20 for the most competitive applicants.

Note that the Admissions Committee will only take into account test results from the most recent attempt. Additionally, the same DAT examination must yield all three competitive scores.

Also applicants may submit unofficial DAT scores directly to denadmissions@tufts. edu up until the AADSAS application makes the official results accessible For those who will take the DAT this cycle, this will allow for an earlier review of their applications.
