Three-Year M.F.A. in Creative Writing

The M. F. A. The creative writing program is dedicated to providing a nurturing environment for its students. We want to welcome authors from underrepresented communities in particular as a program that seeks to cultivate new voices. We encourage people of color to apply. A program, in our opinion, performs best when it consists of talented writers with a diverse range of experiences and backgrounds.

Students who identify as POC can join a POC student organization that is in charge of selecting a candidate each year to represent diversity and all student concerns on the creative writing committee.

Additionally, our program aims to provide a welcoming and encouraging environment for all participants, including LGBTQ, international, veteran, first-generation college students, and disabled students.

The Writing Program, a separate academic division that focuses on composition, and the Living Writers course, which welcomes eminent guest authors from the Raymond Carver Reading Series, offer students the chance to teach. Additionally, students can learn valuable editing and publishing skills by contributing to Salt Hill, a renowned campus literary journal. The creative writing program has produced a remarkable variety of writers over the course of its nearly 50-year existence, some of whose works have been featured in prestigious publications and won awards. Chanelle Benz, Lily King, Tom Perrotta, Julia Alvarez, and recent graduates Nana Adjei-Brenyah, Alexandra Chang, Wendy Chen, Anthony So, and Rohan Chhetri are among the notable alumni.

Statement of Solidarity from the Syracuse University Creative Writing Program

In opposition to the structural racism in this nation that resulted in the deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Eric Garner, and thousands of others over the course of the last 400 years, we, the faculty of Syracuse University’s MFA Program in Creative Writing, stand with our students.

We support the Black Lives Matter movement, which calls for justice and opposes the dehumanization of Black people by the police, along with our students, the protests, and other groups. We oppose an unjust system that endangers the lives of LGBTQIA people as well as all people of color. We also promise to examine our own curriculum closely in order to eliminate any institutionalized racism from our classroom communities and to better support all of our students in their writing endeavors.

We say all these things, and yet we know that we haven’t done enough—that we’ve been too passive, both now and during the #NotAgainSU movement. We must educate ourselves, hire and retain new faculty of color, continue to attract a diverse student body, and work to improve things rather than focusing on why they aren’t in order to combat white supremacy. We’re here to hear the worries of our students, to stand up for them, and to put in the effort to create a community that is safe and accepting of all students and faculty, especially those of color and LGBTQIA individuals. We promise to back up our convictions with deeds that reflect our commitment to them.

The three-year M. F. A. A program in creative writing offers aspiring poets and fiction writers the chance to work on their craft with passionate other writers.
