CCHS Junior Selected for Prestigious Noonan Scholars Program
Gabriela Rosario, a 20-year-old junior at Central Catholic, was recently chosen as one of 100 students nationwide to join the prestigious six-year SCS Noonan Scholars program, which offers academic, career, and financial support for the remainder of high school and all of college. Almost 1,000 students applied for this program with an only 10% acceptance rate
According to the SCS Noonan Scholars Program, the mission is “to help high-achieving low-income underrepresented students get into – and graduate from – top colleges equipped to achieve their full career potential.”
When Radhames Nova, a 1993 CCHS graduate, contacted the school, Gabriela’s journey began. Top of the list was Gabriela, a student with an impressive academic record and a long list of extracurricular activities.
The Counseling Team encouraged Gabriela to apply in late January, and when she did her homework and found out more, she was intrigued. “At first, I thought it was just a program to get you ready for college, but it’s ten times more than that,” Gabriela also received face-to-face mentoring from Radhames Nova 93 throughout the process, which she described as “a game changer for me!”
The summer before a student’s senior year of high school, the SCS Noonan Scholar program—which is only open to high school juniors—begins:
- Gabriela will take part in Summer Academy over the course of the following two summers. Summer Academy is a comprehensive, residential program that lasts six weeks and offers college-level coursework.
- She will attend the Amherst College Summer Academy this summer (2019), where students can also interact in person with college recruiters from highly selective institutions.
- Gabriela will attend the Summer Academy at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, California, the summer before her senior year (2020).
- Then, for the duration of their college careers, scholars are paired with an advisor who will assist them in choosing colleges, applying for aid, understanding it, and later finding internship, co-op, and career opportunities.
- As part of the program, scholars also get a computer and an annual stipend.
Being an SCS Noonan Scholar feels liberating to Gabriela, who wants to become a physical therapist. “I can browse colleges without restrictions, and that takes a tremendous burden off my shoulders. Having this support from the SCS Noonan Scholars program is liberating, and I am grateful to have been chosen. I wasn’t even aware of how significant it was until I was summoned to Mr. He gave me a bear hug and appeared to be on the verge of tears. He assured me that the opportunity would change my life, and it has. ”.
Gabriela balances her honors coursework with involvement in the Lawrence YMCA’s Teen Achievers Program, teaching Sunday confirmation classes at St. Mary, who lives in Lawrence, Massachusetts, has worked as a PT’s assistant in nursing homes and elementary schools. Daniela Rosario, Gabriela’s younger sister, is a freshman at Central Catholic at the moment.
