In the state’s southern region, the University of California San Diego School of Medicine has been training future doctors for more than 50 years.
The school was established in 1968 and now enrolls more than 500 medical students in addition to more than 900 residents and fellows. It is associated with UC San Diego Health, which includes the UC San Diego Medical Center in addition to numerous other institutions, clinics, and other facilities.
The school offers a four-year doctorate in medicine program that includes a pre-clerkship curriculum with a focus on clinical foundations and human health and disease, followed by two years of clinical experience. Students complete 135 hours of study in a variety of electives to gain additional experience.
Additionally, the medical school offers several other graduate programs. Students also can participate in several joint M. D. /Ph. D. programs, such as the Medical Scientist Training Program or Bioengineering, in which they receive both a doctorate and a medical degree.
They also have the option to pursue an “Independent Ph. D,” where they pursue education in the Biomedical Sciences Program or in another program related to science or engineering. A few joint programs between the medical school and San Diego State University allow students to obtain doctorates in a variety of fields, including clinical psychology, audiology, and others.
