For those of you who have been waitlisted at one of your top choices, heres our initial update of Class of 2026 waitlist notification dates and status where available.
We examined the most recent waitlist statistics from 120 private and public institutions for the Class of 2025 to get a sense of the overall situation. Our analysis paints the following picture:
- When compared year over year, the number of students admitted from the waitlist fell by 46%, from 61,000 for the Class of 2024 to 33,000 for the Class of 2025.
- Compared to the Class of 2024, only 15% of Class of 2025 applicants who accepted a spot on the waitlist were ultimately accepted.
- 13 percent of the Class of 2025’s enrollees were waitlist students, down from 27 percent for the Class of 2024.
- 10 percent or fewer of the students accepting a spot on the waitlist for the Class of 2025 were admitted by 61% of the schools sampled (vs 28 percent for the Class of 2024).
As anticipated, the Class of 2025 saw a return to more normal waitlist activity levels as institutions dealt with an increase in gap year deferrals, vaccination programs got going, and students were finally allowed to return to campus. For the Class of 2026, we anticipate that waitlist activity will continue to be moderate.

Interested in STEM, but not one particular field? Does everything from quantitative finance to epidemiology to electrical engineering to climate science fascinate you? Then consider majoring in applied math!
Almost every university offers a major in mathematics. However, the math major in many schools prioritizes pure math over applied and computational math (ACM). Students in the former discipline, which is more conventional, primarily take theoretical classes like geometry, number theory, and topology. But for many high schoolers who are interested in STEM, like myself, the latter field might pique their curiosity more. Students in ACM will use mathematical ideas like differential equations and dynamical systems along with other sciences like biology and physics to analyze problems in real-world science.
There has never been a better time to become an applied mathematician than in the social and technological environment of today. Students studying ACM can carry out cutting-edge work in any of the fields mentioned above and so many more thanks to cutting-edge computational resources that enable mathematical modeling and simulation of complex systems.
Check out our most recent ranking of colleges offering the best ACM majors in the country if you’re interested in this cutting-edge, emerging field. We’ve chosen a list of the top universities offering a dedicated ACM program, extensive undergraduate research opportunities for ACM students, and when available, specialized concentrations within the program using data gathered from individual university websites.

If youre in the hunt for merit scholarships, be sure to stay on top of explicit deadlines a school on your list might have.
There are some institutions, such as Boston University and the University of Richmond, where you must submit your application by a strict deadline in order to be taken into consideration. Others have a “priority” deadline that increases your chances of receiving merit aid before the funds run out, such as Indiana University and many other public institutions. In any case, merit aid is still a great way for deserving students to cover the cost of their education.
To help you understand the scope and size of the institutions’ merit offerings, we’ve gathered a sample of schools from our coverage universe with clear deadlines. We’ve also included some statistics. For easy access to the details, we’ve also included links to each school’s scholarship page.
Without the need for a separate application, the majority of these schools automatically consider you for merit scholarships.

For those of you who have been waitlisted at one of your top choices, heres a list of 2020 waitlist statistics for several popular private and public schools, along with notification dates and latest status where available.
The following picture is painted by our sample of waitlist statistics from 100 private and public institutions:
- From 22,223 in 2019 to 43,867 in 2020, more students were admitted from the waitlist, a 97 percent increase from the previous year.
- From 18% in 2019 to 29% on average in 2020, students who accepted a spot on a waitlist were admitted.
- Last year, 10% or fewer of the students accepting a spot on the waitlist were admitted by 33% of the schools (compared to 48 percent in 2019).
- 5 percent or fewer applicants were accepted by 17% of the schools (vs 29 percent in 2019).
- 3 percent admitted no one (vs. 8 percent in 2019)
Given the uncertainty caused by the pandemic during the previous cycle, these results are not surprising. That said, given that most of this uncertainty is now behind us and most schools are returning to their regular schedules, we strongly advise against assuming a similar level of waitlist activity this cycle.

The phrase “artificial intelligence,” first used in 1956, refers to the broad idea of enabling machines to carry out human-like functions like problem-solving, decision-making, language comprehension, and sound and speech processing. However, the popularity of AI only recently increased, and this popularity was accompanied by a surge in investment, which caused the AI industry to grow quickly.
Studying AI prepares students to solve problems across a variety of fields and introduces them to a huge job market that continues to expand today. Drawing from U.S. News, TechTarget, CSRankings, Computer Science Degree Hub, Great Value Colleges and Value Colleges, weve curated a list of some of the top undergraduate programs in artificial intelligence across the nation. This list also covers information about the overall admission rates and profiles, offered AI programs, curriculum, and research opportunities and facilities for each listed institution.
