Strong articulation agreements with nearby universities and community colleges allow students who are already enrolled in school to have the connections and support they need to transfer to NYU smoothly.
With resources like the NYU Transfer Student Ambassadors, students who aren’t attending one of the schools that are directly affiliated with NYU can still find what they need to ensure that their application is strong.
That is not to say that getting into NYU isn’t difficult, but students have a great chance of admission if they gather all the necessary information and make a well-thought-out plan.

Admission for transfer students is highly competitive. The majority of NYU’s evaluation will be based on your high school/secondary school grades and performance. By the time they enroll at NYU, our most competitive applicants have accrued at least 32 credits or points of education.
Follow the directions below to apply as a transfer student if any of the following situations apply to you:
- You have a diploma or leaving certificate that is appropriate and have completed the equivalent of a secondary school education in the United States (roughly 12 years of formal education beginning at age six).
AND any of the following apply to you:
- You are or have previously been enrolled as a degree-seeking student at a U.S. institution of higher learning that is regionally accredited. S. ; .
- You are or have previously been a degree-seeking student enrolled in a college or university outside the U S. that is nationally recognized by the countrys primary accrediting council/agency; .
- You are or have previously been enrolled in an American non-degree-seeking program. S. and plan to enroll in NYU after having earned 24 semester credits or more
If any of the following hold true, you ought to fill out a first-year application:
- Even if you are earning enough credits for an associate’s degree, you are still enrolled in a dual-enrollment program. (Being enrolled in both high school and a college-level program is known as dual enrollment.) ); or.
- You’re presently enrolled in an American college or university program that isn’t regionally accredited; or
- You will have less than 24 credits completed by the time you plan to enroll at NYU if you are currently enrolled in a non-degree-seeking program in the United States following high school graduation; or
- You dropped all of your college-level courses, so you don’t have any grades for your college work.

How do I apply?
The Common Application is required for students applying as transfers to our New York campus. Please ensure that you complete the Common Application for Transfer Students rather than First-Years. Currently NYU Abu Dhabi and NYU Shanghai do not accept transfer students.
You’ll need:
- No matter when you graduated, you must provide a secondary or high school transcript or a General Education Diploma with your graduation date.
- College/university transcripts from all institutions you have attended. See below for guidelines on sending official documents.
- If it has been longer than a year since you last attended classes, either the Common Application Instructor Evaluation form OR a letter of recommendation written by a college professor or a direct supervisor
- There are additional requirements for many of our programs, which may include an audition, a portfolio, or prerequisite training. Please take the time to carefully read the additional program requirements for your program, school, or college.
- Nonrefundable $80.00 application fee.
Other Considerations:
- New York University is extending its test-optional policy to students applying for first-year or transfer admission during the upcoming admissions cycle in recognition of the ongoing difficulties applicants face with standardized testing during COVID-19.
- The Steinhardt School and Tisch School of the Arts’ art and music programs require an audition or portfolio.
- If you have not finished at least three years of study where English is the only language of instruction or English is not your native language, English Language Testing must be submitted.
- Some students will have to turn in an SRAR, or Self-Reported Academic Record. After submitting your application, you might be required to complete a SRAR for any college or university work you did in the U S.
- Although it is not required, NYU reserves the right to ask any transfer student for a midterm report.

Please be aware that NYU only accepts one program application per term. Your additional applications will be automatically withdrawn if you submit more than one program application each term, and you will not be given a refund.
Financial Aid for Transfer Applicants

When should I apply?

We advise submitting your Common Application one month earlier if you’re applying to a program that requires an artistic review so you have time to prepare your portfolio or an audition before the deadline.

NYU accepts the submission of original/certified copies or unofficial copies. A certified copy bears the seal of the institution or the registrar’s original signature, as appropriate. If the document is not in English, provide a certified English translation. The translation may be issued by a school representative or by a translation company that is accredited in the nation where the educational institution is located. Only documents submitted to NYU Shanghai in Mandarin Chinese will NYU make an exception.
Official sources are limited to those obtained directly from a school employee, a nationally or internationally renowned testing organization, or other neighborhood organizations with permission from the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Any additional sources must receive permission from the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

Does NYU Tandon accept transfer students?
Graduate Students. During their first semester of enrollment at Tandon, students must provide documentation to their academic adviser if they wish to transfer credits. If the departmental adviser approves the course(s), the department must submit a memo using the Academic Memo Management System of the Registrar.
