This summer, two Merit Alice S. Pfaelzer Tuition-free Conservatory students had the experience of a lifetime.
Irene Castillo, violin, and Rafael Noriega, bass trombone, received invitations to join the National Youth Orchestra of the United States (NYO) from Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute after successfully completing a rigorous application process. The program brings together the most talented young instrumentalists from the United States for intensive training and appearances on some of the biggest stages in the world.
Irene was accepted into NYO-USA, whose tour began with performances at Tanglewood and Carnegie Hall with Isabel Leonard, continued with performances in Great Britain, the Netherlands, and Germany with Joyce DiDonato, and ended with performances in Berlin with Magdalena Koená.
Rafael spent time with NYO2, performing at the New World Center and Carnegie Hall with pianist Gabriela Montero. He studied in Miami Beach with conductor Carlos Miguel Prieto through a collaboration with the New World Symphony.
The two musicians recently sat down with us to discuss what this encounter meant to them.
