A special partnership between UTHealth Houston and MD Anderson Cancer Center is the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBS) at MD Anderson Cancer Center. This collaborative effort offers students unmatched access to cutting-edge resources, top-tier faculty, and limitless opportunities for biomedical research.
Through an umbrella admissions process, students are admitted directly to the graduate school rather than into departments or programs. Students use the application for admission to submit their applications to the Graduate School for a MS, Specialized MS, or PhD in Biomedical Sciences. Three tutorial rotations are completed by beginning PhD students before choosing a faculty advisor and enrolling in a graduate program.
For a PhD candidate preparing for graduate school, basic courses in biology, physics, calculus, and biochemistry are advised as undergraduate coursework. Please carefully read the requirements and instructions before starting your application.

All applicants who are offered admission to the PhD program must participate in interviews. Between mid-December and mid-February, email invitations to visitation/interview weekends will be distributed. On the following dates: January 19–20, February 2-3, February 16–17, March 2-3, and a virtual option for international applicants, visitation/interview weekends will be held in person.
The final time to submit all application materials is 11:59 p. m. central time. Early submission is encouraged. Before the deadline, submit all materials, including letters of recommendation. No late materials will be accepted.
Admissions Interviews and Enrollment
- How can I obtain an assistantship? Graduate research assistantships are provided to all PhD students. PhD students receive GSBS funding to cover their assistantship. The GSBS assistantship includes a $36,000 annual stipend, payment of the students’ tuition and fees, and health insurance coverage for the 2023–2024 academic year. After the GSBS-funded assistantship expires, the faculty mentor continues to pay the students. Visit the Financial Assistance section for additional details.
- The graduate school does not provide financial assistance to candidates for the MS degree, how can I obtain one? Admission to our MS programs in Genetic Counseling and Medical Physics does not guarantee an assistantship, so students should plan on funding their education on their own. Unless they opt to waive the GRA, students enrolled in the MS Program in Biomedical Sciences will be supported by their faculty advisor once they join a lab through a Graduate Research Assistantship (GRA). The GRA offers a $24,000–$32,000 annual stipend, health insurance, and tuition and fee support.
- Based on comparisons across the country, the stipend offered by GSBS is extremely competitive and should be sufficient to cover my living expenses. Houston has one of the lowest living expenses in the US. Thus, it is certainly possible to live on this stipend. The majority of our current students discover they can cover the cost of an apartment, groceries, and auto insurance without taking out loans.
- We provide financial support to all PhD students who are admitted to GSBS, including international students. This award includes a yearly stipend of $36,000. In addition, tuition, fees and health benefits are covered.
