A chair in architecture was established in the Faculty of Applied Science (currently the Faculty of Engineering) at McGill University in 1896, which led to the establishment of the school. Macdonald. (Professional) degree is acknowledged as accredited by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) in the United States and by the Canadian Architectural Certification Board (CACB). All provincial/territorial associations, institutions, and orders in Canada advise earning a professional degree from an accredited program as a requirement for licensure. There are two types of accredited degrees recognized by the Canadian Architectural Certification Board (CACB), which is the only organization authorized to do so for Canadian professional degree programs in architecture.
