A chair in architecture was established in the Faculty of Applied Science (currently the Faculty of Engineering) at McGill University in 1896, which led to the establishment of the school. Macdonald. At that time, the professional degree program took four years to complete, and the school’s first director, Stewart Henbest Capper, oversaw operations in the Macdonald Engineering Building. Currently, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering is responsible for eight units, including the School of Architecture. This includes two schools—the School of Urban Planning and the School of Architecture—and five engineering departments—Chemistry Engineering, Civil Engineering and Applied Mechanics, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Bioengineering, and Mining and Materials Engineering. The Macdonald-Harrington Building, designed by Sir Andrew Taylor in 1896 for the Departments of Chemistry and Mining, has housed the Schools of Architecture and Urban Planning since 1987. It was renovated for the two Schools by architects Ray Affleck and Arcop Associates.

There are two sections to the architecture professional program: – B S. Arch. : six semesters / 100 credits (minimum) – M. Arch. Design Studio (Professional) – Non-Thesis: Design Studio – Directed Research (4 semesters / 60 credits) or Design Studio (3 semesters / 45 credits) The M Arch. (Professional) degree is acknowledged as accredited by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) in the United States and by the Canadian Architectural Certification Board (CACB). All provincial/territorial associations, institutions, and orders in Canada advise earning a professional degree from an accredited program as a requirement for licensure. There are two types of accredited degrees recognized by the Canadian Architectural Certification Board (CACB), which is the only organization authorized to do so for Canadian professional degree programs in architecture. Arch. ) and the Bachelor of Architecture (B. Arch. ). Depending on how closely a program adheres to established educational standards, it may be accredited for six years, three years, or two years. A pre-professional undergraduate degree and a professional graduate degree are both options for master’s degree programs, and when earned in succession, they make up an accredited professional education. However, the preprofessional degree is not accepted as an accredited degree in and of itself. The School of Architecture offers post-professional M. Arch. (Non-Thesis) and Ph. D. programs. Post-professional programs are only for those who have already completed their professional training in architecture, with some exceptions. The basis for considering applicants is their academic record from high school, college, and prior studies. You should have academic credentials that are significantly above average and meet the prerequisites for the McGill program you want to enroll in. Results from courses that are relevant to the proposed program of study will receive special consideration.
Science and mathematics courses typically need to have been finished within the last five years in order to serve as a basis for admission to a program that is based on the sciences or to be taken into consideration for credit or exemption.
The determination of your advanced standing credit, if you have been accepted as a student, will not be made until you have confirmed your program at McGill, made the necessary deposit payment, and supplied all required supporting documentation, such as thorough course descriptions and syllabi. You are required to list the names and editions of the textbooks used in addition to the course descriptions for mathematics and science courses.
A Quebec high school graduate who pursued one full year of university study outside of Quebec but did not continue on to CEGEP may be eligible for admission as a Transfer student. If you fit into this category, you should speak with the relevant McGill University Admissions Office before applying to make sure you have a good reason to be admitted. Please be aware that courses taken at colleges or institutions primarily focused on providing religious education (like bible colleges, seminaries, or yeshivas) are typically not regarded as being equivalent to university study.
Transfer admission may not be available to people who have studied in non-university post-secondary institutions like technical colleges.
