Many Listverse authors have their own way of gathering material. Through trial and error, youll also develop your own system. For today, I can only offer my simple technique. Feel free to poach or ignore it!.

I visit websites about topics I find interesting, such as earth sciences, technology, animals, and humor.
I keep links that catch my attention in a special file on my computer.
I eventually go through the links and try to group the ten best ones into one list.
When I group a few but fall short of all ten, I’ll look for the rest online.

How to Write Your List

Summarize Content and Include Sources. Once you have your ten items, give each source some time to sink in. For instance, if your source is a BBC article, condense the article into a 180–200 word entry. This amount is just a personal guideline, but it helps me reach the 1,500–1,800 word minimum required for a Listverse list. The word count includes your main title and introductory paragraph. Any lists with a lower count won’t be accepted as of this writing. Again, take your time. A good list cannot be written in a few hours.
Format Your List. When you’re done writing, the next step is to organize every entry according to a specific format. Give each section a number and a catchy title. Reading other people’s lists will help you quickly learn how to do this. The entries also go from number 10 to number 1 from top to bottom. Since this is a ranking system, the best entry must be at the top.

Even when you are repeatedly rejected, give it your all and persevere. My first five or six lists were all turned down. But I persisted, reading lists and honing my work to satisfy Listverses’ internal requirements. The result? To date, Ive sold close to 300 lists.
