Faculty

The MA in International Studies program is supervised by the Graduate Group in International Studies, which also confers the MA degree. It is a multidisciplinary group of tenured faculty members whose primary duty is to ensure that the program’s academic standards are met and is effective. The Lauder Graduate Group supervises all curriculum changes, teaches the required Area History courses and a range of electives in international studies, evaluates all new Lauder courses, and frequently supervises student research projects for the Global Knowledge Lab.

Curriculum

Lauder’s 24-month MBA/MA joint degree includes core international studies courses, region-specific learning, immersive travel opportunities, and a capstone research project in addition to the Wharton MBA curriculum. Students start the program with their first summer immersion, which begins in June with Lauder’s four-week Pre-Term for first-year students. Later, in late June and early July, they travel abroad with a select group of classmates who will be studying the same part of the world. Just in time for MBA Pre-Term, Wharton’s first-year MBA orientation, head back to Philadelphia.

Once on campus, take a mix of interdisciplinary core courses, electives, and language study tailored around a region of focus. Lauder Institute coursework is grounded in the social sciences and humanities disciplines. Through in-class and field-based learning, students acquire a foundation in the geographic, historical, social, political, economic, and cultural factors that shape the varying nature of global business today. Opportunities for field-based learning occur through an eight-week summer immersion, the Lauder Intercultural Ventures, and the Global Knowledge Lab (MA thesis research). Upon application to the Lauder Institute, students choose a Program of Concentration. The Institute offers five region-focused Programs of Concentration, plus the Global Program. Intensive, advanced language study is offered in all regional programs, with the exception of the General track Africa Program and the Global Program, which are targeted towards students with interests in these areas who have met the minimum language requirements for admission.

There are 6 programs of concentration that include 10 languages:

Africa

East and Southeast Asia

Europe

Latin America

South Asia, The Middle East, and North Africa

Global

Global Immersions and Venture Programs are additional opportunities during the Lauder curriculum. Immersions are educational opportunities that allow students to experience a place as if they were a part of it, interacting with people in a genuine and meaningful way, recognizing and navigating cultural differences, and more. The Lauder Institute’s summer immersion and short-term immersion programs, in contrast to the typical study abroad opportunities provided by international MBA programs, are necessary to complete the joint MBA/MA or JD/MA degree. These immersions, which are essential for graduation, help students become future leaders in international business. All Lauder immersions—required or optional—are part of the Lauder curriculum, thorough in terms of the regions and subjects they cover, and open to Lauder alums. The summer immersion, the seven-day Lauder Intercultural Ventures, the one- to two-day Language Immersion Programs, and the optional Lauder Culture Quest during winter break are the four different types of immersions.

Students choose a topic for their capstone project, which fulfills Lauder’s master’s thesis requirement, the Global Knowledge Lab (GKL). Under the direction of two faculty members from Wharton and the School of Arts and Sciences, travel the globe both individually and collectively to conduct original research and write up a thesis.
