Research-Based Doctoral Degrees at the Harvard Graduate School of Education

HGSE switched from awarding a Doctor of Education (Ed. D. ) to a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph. D. ) in Education in the fall of 2014. The Ed. D. was superseded by the Ph. D. To better reflect the program’s research focus since it began in 1921 and to strengthen ties with academic divisions across Harvard University, a joint degree in Education is awarded in conjunction with the Harvard Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.

The Ed. D. and Ph. D. Both education programs give their graduates a rigorous intellectual education. Reflecting the multidisciplinary nature of education, both degrees involve training that increases both knowledge and experience in the range of quantitative and qualitative methodologies required to carry out high-quality research. In order to have a transformative impact on education research, policy, and practice, our alumni conduct independent research in a range of fields, including human development, learning and teaching, policy analysis and evaluation, institutions and society, and instructional practice. Graduates from both programs currently hold and will continue to hold positions as senior educators, researchers, and university professors.
