Our degree programs

In the fields of Chemistry, Chemical Biology, and Chemical Physics, we provide two distinct graduate degrees. The average length of both programs is 5 to 6 years.

Course Requirements

Chemistry and Chemical Biology Ph.D. candidates must pass four advanced courses in chemistry and/or related fields (e.g. biochemistry, physics, etc.). Chemical Physics Ph.D. candidates must pass five advanced courses in chemistry and/or related fields (e.g. biochemistry, physics, etc.).

Tuition and Fees

All PhD students’ tuition is paid for by the department. Learn more on our graduate student financial support page. All enrolled students at CCB are given a $39,000 stipend.

Required Tests

Anyone who did not earn their undergraduate degree from a 4-year program where English is the primary language must submit either the TOEFL or the IELTS.

Submission of GRE test scores is optional/not required.

Application

The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences facilitates the application submission process for both the Chemistry and Chemical Physics PhD programs.

The application deadline is December 1st. In February, the department releases its admissions decisions, and in March, it invites accepted students to an official visit. Our visits with accepted students usually take place in late February or early March.
