As a result of the resolution passed by the Hamburg Parliament to establish the institution on March 28, 1919, the University of Hamburg was established. The citizens of Hamburg chose it in the first such election, which was fair and free. Thus, it goes on to become the first democratically-run university in Germany. On May 10, 1919, it opened its doors with a special concert to mark the occasion.
The origins of the University of Hamburg in Germany can be traced to the Akademisches Gymnasium, which operated from 1613 to 1833. By 1895, there was a general lecture series with several free public lectures on various topics. Merchant Edmund Siemers donated a building for this project in 1911. As a result, the HWS and Colonial Institute were founded in 1907 and 1908, respectively. The University of Hamburg’s acceptance rate is 18%.
