Observation Hours Provide evidence of knowledge of physical therapy through employment, volunteer work, or observation in a physical therapy department for a minimum of 100 hours. A minimum of 20 hours must be in a general inpatient setting (
Letters of Recommendation
Three (3) letters of recommendation (LORs) are REQUIRED
Arrange for three (3) letters of recommendation to be sent to PTCAS on your behalf. (See COVID-19 Updates HERE)
(2) are REQUIRED to be from a licensed physical therapist. Fresno State physical therapy faculty are not acceptable references.
(1) is REQUIRED to be from a professor, who you have taken a course from (4-year university professor recommended)
If you submit more letters than required, only 3 LORs are considered. All LORs must be received by the application deadline. It is the students responsibility to ensure all LORs are submitted by the deadline.
Preferred method: Use the electronic reference process on PTCAS and submit by PTCAS application deadline. If needed, the paper reference option is available on the PTCAS website. An original letter must accompany the reference request form in order to be accepted and must be in a sealed envelope on official institutional or business stationery.
Submit a Cal State Apply Graduate Application
By January 15, 2023, submit a Cal State Apply Graduate Application.
- Make arrangements for the delivery of all transcripts and GRE scores to Fresno State Graduate Admissions.
In-Person Interview
- Although COVID-19 may affect our in-person interviews, we will still require a virtual interview if doing so is not practical.
- Meeting the aforementioned requirements does not guarantee a candidate will be interviewed.
- You will be invited to an interview if you have met the minimum requirements for admission and graduated from high school in one of the following counties: Fresno, Tulare, Madera, Merced, Stanislaus, Kern, Tuolumne, Mariposa, or Kings (or if you attended Fresno State).
- You may still be interviewed even if your county is not among those listed.

Remember only 10% of applicants get accepted, so if you do the minimum number of hours it doesn’t say much about your commitment to a future as a physical therapist Consider working much more hours than the minimum advised if you want to increase your chances.

The acceptance rate at Cal State Fresno is 57. 5%. For every 100 applicants, 58 are admitted. This means the school is moderately selective. The school is more accommodating than other schools and still expects you to meet their GPA and SAT/ACT requirements.
What is a good college GPA for PT school?
The majority of applicants to DPT programs have a GPA of 3. 5 or better. What doesn’t matter so much is your undergraduate major. There isn’t a single major that directly leads to PT school. It won’t matter as long as your degree program permits you to enroll in the aforementioned courses.
