Coed boarding and day school for students in grades 9 through 12 as well as a post-graduate year, The Frederick Gunn School was established in 1850. Mr. Gunn had a great appreciation for the natural world and thought that by being in it, children could better understand who they are as people and where they fit in it. He stood firmly against slavery and inspired students (as well as the town at large) to consider their convictions. We teach students not only the routines and abilities they’ll need for college and beyond, but also Mr. Gunn’s example: to develop wisdom, to forge new paths, to act with conviction, and to place equal value on character and achievement

- We believe in having heroes. The Frederick Gunn School is really all about people, and Frederick Gunn in particular. Mr. Gunn (1816–1881) was a fervent opponent of slavery, a perceptive teacher, and an all-around outdoorsman. He established a school and a long-lasting philosophy that encourages students to identify their values and stand up for them. Today, we imitate his aptitude and abilities as a youth educator and hold him up as an example of the kind of citizen the 21st century requires. Mr. Gunns’ example serves as a reminder of the value of commitment, self-assurance, and character.
- Raising a teenager is never easy. Why not do it yourself? Some parents who are considering sending their children to a boarding school wonder why they would give up so much control over their child’s life. However, after some thought, we all realize that the prospect of leaving my child in the care of a 24/7 community of skilled adult educators who have dedicated their lives to assisting young people in achieving their goals is actually the greatest gift a parent can give their child. Since most parents are doing the best they can while adapting to their child’s developmental stages, it is important to be honest about this. The Frederick Gunn School provides adult teacher-mentors who have been there, done that, and are particularly adept at predicting what will come next for a adolescent. Mr. Gunn recognized the value of a diverse learning environment, and we still take it seriously today. We have accepted an international, purposefully diverse group of students for the past 170 years, that’s right, Mr. Smith, if you’re still debating whether boarding school is better. We want good students who are good people and who also seek the good of others, so Gunn had exchange students!
- The outdoors shaped Mr. Gunn. It shapes our students too. We live in boxes – houses, dorms, classrooms, offices. The horizon serves as the edge of our universe and there are no walls in the larger world, so it’s important to venture outside and get oriented. Mr. Gunn understood this and we continue the tradition today. A broad-minded education should include an appreciation of the natural world and our place in it. In a world of screens that somehow influence our lives despite our best efforts, it is also the best remedy we are aware of for rediscovering our humanity. Children can rediscover enduring sources of self and joy by being reintroduced to the unmediated natural world, in our opinion, rather than just being told what they should and shouldn’t do.
- Really, what are students preparing for? Our curriculum is extensive, and we cover a wide range of subjects in the classroom. We also learn how to learn, which is more important because it lasts a lifetime even after we’ve forgotten the names of the Tudor kings. Yes, it’s college preparation, but more importantly, it’s life preparation for after college.
- Beauty breaks everywhere. Students have traveled for 170 years to study at a beautiful campus surrounded by woods, trails, rivers, and lakes. Today, Washington, Connecticut, and Litchfield County in general are regarded as a picture-perfect place where city dwellers can find a country escape full of quaint stores, fine dining, and lovely accommodations like The Mayflower Inn.
- A choice for something better. The Frederick Gunn School students spend their senior year maturing, becoming wiser, and gaining self-assurance.
