In response to market demands for new technology and media skills, CDM offers a wide range of innovative and practical graduate programs. Numerous graduate programs accept applications on a rolling basis, but precise deadlines—and any additional admission materials needed—can be found by looking at the details of the individual programs below.

Programs that produce graduates with a STEM education—science, technology, engineering, and/or math—and who support U S. economic competitiveness and growth. International students who graduate from STEM-designated programs may be eligible to extend their Optional Practical Training (OPT) stay in the United States after graduation. OPT gives international students a chance to advance their careers while also assisting in meeting the demand for STEM-trained professionals in the U S. workforce.

Candidates for this program must submit an information sheet and reel/portfolio. The electronic portfolio is uploaded as part of your application. Prior to your final submission, faculty may review your pending materials; however, no admission decisions will be made until the application period has ended and your final materials have been received. At that point, a file will be deemed incomplete and ineligible for consideration for admission.

  • Reel/Portfolio The focus should be on the work samples. Keep it simple, clearly labeled, and easy to navigate. HD resolution should be used for reels, and Vimeo or YouTube should host the online version if at all possible. Your showcase should last 5–10 minutes and only feature your best work. Quality is valued over quantity. For longer works, include segments to the full version. You may include both animations and live action work. You must have played a major part in the development of each illustration. High-quality scans of illustrations, paintings, storyboards, pictures, and designs can be included in portfolios. Limit your portfolio to the best dozen examples. You may also include detailed magnifications.
  • Reel/Portfolio Information Sheet This document should list all of the pieces in your portfolio, their titles, mediums, dates, timecodes in the reels, dimensions, and your contributions to their creation.

In their first year of attendance only, students who have been accepted into the MA Animation program may apply to the MFA Animation program (up to 24 credits may have been earned for the MA program). Students who are accepted into the MFA program may transfer any courses that are applicable to both programs. The MFA clock doesn’t extend because of a program change; it starts when you first enroll in the MA Animation program.

You are not required to submit each item on this list because it is not exhaustive. The submission of whatever the students feel best represents them as artists is encouraged.

  • An outline for a four-minute film that contains no dialogue. It can be fiction or non-fiction. A maximum of two pages must be used to visually communicate the story.
  • A dialogue scene between two people. This needs to be in proper screenplay format and be no longer than 3 pages.
  • a fiction or documentary feature-length movie idea that you’d like to develop (no more than two pages)
  • A short narrative video that you played a significant creative role in The video should showcase your aesthetic preferences, intellectual and emotional interests, and it can be either live-action or animated, fictional or documentary. (no more than 5 minutes).
  • Send in a set of six photos you’ve taken that, when taken in a certain order, either depict a distinctive and original character or tell a straightforward story.
