Please choose “Nursing” as your intended major on Cal State Apply if you are a first-time freshman. If a student applies as a first-time freshman and is accepted, their major will be listed as “Pre-Nursing.”
This is not a direct entry program; as such, students who have been declared as “Pre-Nursing” must complete the necessary prerequisite coursework before applying to the School of Nursing.
All applications are scored and ranked among the entire applicant pool, which includes current undergraduate pre-nursing students, undergraduate transfers from other schools, and applicants seeking a second-degree BSN, with no preference given to CSULB Pre-Nursing majors when applying to the School of Nursing.
At Student Orientation, Advising, and Registration (SOAR), admitted freshmen will receive advice.
Pre-Nursing majors will work with their academic advisor after enrolling to finish the necessary prerequisite coursework and submit an application to the School of Nursing.

You may apply while taking the prerequisite courses, but to be competitive, we advise all applicants to apply once they have finished and posted their final grades. Any prerequisite course that is still in progress will be scored and ranked as a “C.”
- Final grades from the previous Fall term should be posted for Fall semester admission. Ex: Fall 2022 for application to Fall 2023. For purposes of scoring and ranking, courses scheduled for or in progress in Winter 2022, Spring 2023, or Summer 2023 will be given a grade of “C.”

The GPAs will only be calculated using the first Science or GE course with a C or better that satisfies a requirement.
Anatomy, physiology, microbiology, and chemistry prerequisite courses must have been taken within the previous five years.
The social science prerequisites (economics, geography, history, law, linguistics, political science, psychology, communication studies, sociology) must have been completed within the previous ten years.
The Nursing School will take the application deadline into account when the courses expire.
Example: Since the application deadline for the spring of 2023 is September 21, 2022, the earliest natural science coursework that will be accepted is that from the summer of 2018 (final grades as of September 21, 2022).
Students may take the prerequisites at any college or university if the courses taken are equivalent in units and content (based on the course description/summary and course syllabus) to the CSULB prerequisite courses listed above. It is the responsibility of the applicant to determine course equivalency. Do not assume that the courses you took will be equivalent to CSULB’s courses. Also, do not assume a course is equivalent even if it is accepted by another nursing program. In addition to using Assist as a resource, applicants are advised to review coursework with a counselor or advisor from their home community college/University/transfer institution to determine course equivalency. The School of Nursing will not review requests to determine course equivalency. Please use the resources below to determine course equivalency.
If a student has not yet been admitted to the nursing major, the school cannot enroll them in nursing courses. Applicants are advised to complete CSULB GE requirements. If they are able to enroll, some applicants may choose to take the Nursing BSN Support courses (gerontology, sociology, and psychology). To ensure that the courses will be equivalent, please read the course descriptions and syllabi. The College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) Advising Office should be consulted to plan coursework as the School of Nursing cannot advise applicants on the support courses.
Only credit is awarded for AP courses when the prerequisite is satisfied; they are not scored or calculated for the GPA.
AP English may be acceptable for the Written Communication prerequisite.
The coursework for the prerequisite in chemistry must be equivalent to CSULB CHEM 140; AP chemistry is not acceptable.
For the prerequisite in statistics, only a statistics course or AP statistics may be used (equivalent to CSULB STAT 108, STAT 118, HDEV 190, PSY 110, SOC 170). Other math courses will not be acceptable.
For CSULB PSY 100, AP psychology might be acceptable (see the Nursing BSN catalog).

No. The University can only award the BSN before the NCLEX can be taken.
Each semester for the Basic BSN program is planned to be 15 or 16 units. To reduce the number of units during the regular semester, some students enroll in general education courses over the summer or winter breaks. The leave of absence process must be followed if a student needs to miss a semester (see Student Handbook and Policies).
Typically, nursing courses are offered in the morning or early evening. One or two days a week are dedicated to lecture and lab classes. Clinical courses are available during the day or evening shifts, Monday through Sunday.
Nursing courses in the summer will only be available to participants in the Trimester Traditional Basic BSN Program.
Once accepted, BSN students are expected to have current health insurance, a valid California driver’s license, auto insurance, and CPR certification in addition to meeting the university’s and the clinical agencies’ health requirements.
Physical examination, two-step tuberculosis screening, and positive titers for the measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, hepatitis-B, and flu vaccine are all prerequisites for receiving a health clearance.
In order to participate in clinical placement(s) at their respective facilities, the majority of healthcare organizations demand that nursing students have a clean criminal background check; background checks will be required of all students upon enrollment. Additionally, prior to starting clinical placements, some healthcare organizations will demand drug testing. The Nursing BSN takes about five semesters to complete.
