Most people proudly dedicate themselves to long-term military careers when they take on the challenge of becoming commissioned officers. After graduating from college, the first step toward that career is Officer Candidate School (or Officer Training School, for the Air Force and Space Force). Featured Programs:
In every service, OCS/OTS is the training that distinguishes officers from enlisted personnel. It provides a more demanding intellectual path to service, one that also offers greater rewards. Officers work more interesting and difficult jobs, earn more money, and have more career options both inside and outside the military.
You should read our Pre-Service College Guide if you haven’t yet obtained that four-year degree to find out how you might be able to benefit from DoD education benefits and other choices even before you start serving in the military.
A commissioned officer also has access to a wide range of additional training opportunities, including those offered by elite military academies of all stripes and formal college courses. If you play your cards right (and sign up for a few more years of service), you may even be able to get the military to pay for a graduate degree.
However, you must first complete a demanding set of training that will challenge you mentally and physically. You’ll be happy you already have a college degree because those study techniques will come in handy when you’re studying for classes on damage control techniques or discovering the nuances of celestial navigation.
Overview:
Applying for selection as a Coast Guard officer through the Officer Candidate School program is open to both civilians and current enlisted members of the Coast Guard who want to develop their leadership skills and are willing to take on the challenge of greater responsibility in one of the service’s many missions. Officer Candidate School (OCS) is a 17-week, highly specialized program that teaches military, law enforcement, navigation, management, and leadership skills. OCS classes meet twice a year, in the summer and in January.
It is an amazing reality that OCS graduates will be expected to successfully supervise CG enlisted personnel as they carry out CG missions after only 17 weeks of training. Some of these CG members have years of experience, and in some cases, they may have more experience than the officer has had in their lifetimes. Therefore, before starting the OCS application process, applicants should honestly assess their leadership experience as well as project and budget management skills to determine their level of competitiveness. The Coast Guard is seeking candidates for the coveted and crucial position of Coast Guard officer who have shown the potential to be exceptional leaders. The United States Coast Guard commissions individuals who complete Officer Candidate School successfully as ensigns (O-1) (note that CG CWOs may also be eligible for commissioning as O-2s).
Initial Assignments and Potential Career Paths
Officer candidates compete for positions that will become available to them after graduation and commissioning during the final stages of OCS. Initial responsibilities will fall under one of the four operational specialties for main officers, such as afloat, aviation, prevention, and response. Assignment to a/n is usually one of the choices for any given OCS graduating class.
- To carry out the duties and obligations of an enforcement or incident management officer (focusing on law enforcement boardings, pollution investigation and response, and operational planning), or to perform the functions of a prevention officer (focusing on marine safety, vessel inspections, vessel mishap investigations, and aids to navigation/waterways).
- Ensigns assigned to sectors also typically rotate through duties at the Sector Command Center, which oversees, directs, and fuses sector operations on a daily basis on behalf of the sector commander. Coast Guard Sector Response Search and rescue, law enforcement, investigation of pollution, incident management, PWCS, and Captain of the Port Authority are all included in this.
- To carry out the responsibilities of a deck watch officer (cutter navigation and piloting) or an engineering officer in training (maintenance of the engine room, propulsion plant, and machinery systems).
- Flight school and training to become a Coast Guard pilot are included in the aviation (training billet).
Officer candidates work with assignment officers to find an initial assignment that best fits their needs, the needs of the service, and their skills, training, experience, and preferences. A junior officer’s first assignment is seen as their chance to learn about and excel in an operational specialty in addition to managing resources and leading people.
Career Path: Many junior officers typically receive follow-up assignments in their initial assignment’s career field. There are opportunities to pursue a subsequent assignment in a different career field or sub-specialty, such as intelligence, human resources, engineering and C4IT, international affairs, legal, recruiting, financial management, and training.
