One of the most typical inquiries about applying to Cambridge is this one.
We typically receive six applications per spot across all subjects, but obviously there is some variation between courses.
Because we compare all applicants for each subject before making selection decisions, your college choice or submission of an open application will have no bearing on your likelihood of receiving an offer.
Directors of Studies from each subject meet to talk about the overall quality of applications so they can compare the applicants from their own College. Then, through the “winter pool,” another College can extend an offer to the best candidates who were rejected by their first College.
Many students (750 in the case of the 2022 cycle, or about 18% of all offers made) receive offers from colleges other than the ones they applied to as a result of the pool. This indicates that success rates are very comparable among colleges.
The University and Colleges are dedicated to providing admission to students with the highest potential and academic ability, and would rather accept a strong applicant from the pool than a weaker applicant who applied directly to them (or who was assigned through the open application system).
NB: When we talk about the admissions cycle, we’re talking about the UCAS cycle. The 2022 cycle, for instance, refers to applications submitted starting in September 2021 for courses beginning in October 2022 or deferred entry in 2023.
