Step One: Online Application & Self‑recorded Video Audition

In the admissions process, a written artist statement is crucial and must answer the following queries:

• What issues and concerns inform your artmaking practice?
• Why are you applying to the Acting program at CalArts?
• What are your artistic goals?
• What narratives most pique your interest? What communities do you hope to engage through your work?
• What about the present historical period inspires you artistically?

Headshot and Resume

In the online application, candidates should upload their headshot and resume.

Self‑recorded Video Audition

Candidates must perform two monologues of different styles, each no longer than two minutes. There must be two—one from Shakespeare and one from a modern play. Each monologue needs to be recorded separately and uploaded to the application as a separate file. Please put the title of the monologue you’re performing and your name as it appears on the application on each file. At the start of each video, applicants should slate their names and the works they’ll be presenting (character, play’s title, and playwright). One video should feature the actor in closeup or mid-closeup, and another video should display the actor moving through their entire range of motion.

Self-recorded Video Audition Requirements and Recommendations:

• Each monologue must be shot in one continuous take without any cuts or edits.
• Please dress appropriately for the audition and avoid wearing makeup that hides your natural facial features. No nudity is allowed.
• Carefully consider your surroundings; there should be minimal distractions.
• Make sure you have enough room to move around and physically interact with your text.
• Make sure there is enough lighting, particularly from the front and the sides.
• Make sure to test your sound quality and eliminate as much ambient sound from the area as you can. Do not dub your sound in after the fact.
• Before submitting, watch your video to ensure that the sound and playback quality are satisfactory.
• Although applicants should make every effort to set up the ideal filming conditions given their circumstances, videos submitted DO NOT have to be professionally shot and edited. Use whatever tools you have at your disposal because content is more important than polish.
• All gender expressions and identities are welcome as actors and characters. Applicants are not required to identify or appear in character as the gender they are portraying.

Optional Supplements

Additionally, candidates may send any other materials they believe best demonstrate their artistic ability and fit with the CalArts community. (Examples could be scripts you’ve written, records of projects you’ve directed, movies you’ve acted in or worked on, voiceover work you’ve done, or other fine arts projects you’ve finished. ).

• Please attach no more than 4 additional files.
• Supplemental video documentation should not be more than 8 minutes long in total.
• Students who wish to submit written work should only submit excerpts that are no longer than 10 pages.

Step Two – Live Auditions

You will be asked to choose a date and location for your live audition after submitting your application.

Please note: We will not be holding virtual auditions. Although attending a live audition is highly encouraged, if you are unable to do so, your application materials will be evaluated without the live audition component, and a decision will be made solely on the basis of those materials.

Live auditions for undergraduates (BFA) will be held in New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago.

There will be live graduate (MFA) auditions in New York and Los Angeles. Although CalArts will also take part in the University Resident Theater Association (URTA) Auditions, we strongly advise prospective students to apply directly to the school as this ensures that they will have the chance to meet with the program director and faculty in person during our live auditions.
