- Liu Xiaobo was a Chinese writer, literary critic, poet, human rights activist, philosopher, and Nobel Peace Prize laureate who called for political reforms and participated in campaigns to end communist one-party rule in China. He was born in China in 1955 and died in 2017 at the age of 62. He was repeatedly detained and is regarded as China’s most prominent dissident and most well-known political prisoner.
